The knowledgable dog professionals at Lancaster, PA’s Dogsense Learning Center for dog training give us some insight into what dogs need to be groomed often.

Many people love long-haired dog breeds, well, until they take them home and are met with copious amounts of hair throughout their house. While people often look at how cute longer haired dog breeds can be, they sometimes overlook the grooming requirements of these dogs.

That’s not to say all long-haired breeds are created equally in grooming terms, or even that only long-haired breeds require a lot of grooming. But on this list, we will touch on some of the dogs who need to be groomed the most.

Poodle.

1. Poodles

Poodles can come in three different sizes, standard, toy, and miniature. But, all three require a lot of grooming attention. Poodles can be groomed in a variety of different styles, which helps add a bit of unique flair to each individual poodle.

One great thing about poodles is that they shed rather infrequently, which helps cut down the amount of brushing you need to maintain your pup. Unfortunately, this is offset by the high frequency that poodles need professionally groomed.

Siberian Husky

2. Siberian Huskies

In stark contrast to Poodles, Siberian’s shed a ton, and due to this, they require a lot of brushing. One good thing is that Siberians do not need to have their fur cut or shaved. While some people do shave their Siberian’s fur, we do not recommend doing so, as it can mess with your pup’s ability to regulate its internal temperature.

The lack of needing to be professionally cut does not change the fact that professional grooming can be extremely useful for your Siberian. Professionally done brush-outs and blowouts can be very helpful in reducing the amount of time you have to put into brushing your dog each week.

Pomeranian

3. Pomeranians

Do not let their small size full you, Pomeranians require a lot of grooming in order to keep the gorgeous double coat their owners tend to love. Like Poodles, Pomeranians have a lot of different styles they can be groomed into.

But like Siberians, they also require a lot of brushing, even more in fact. Pomeranians need to be brushed at least 2-3 times a week, and likely need professionally cut once a month.

Shih Tzu

4. Shih Tzus

The adorable “lion dog” that everyone loves, also has some heavy grooming requirements. While they do not shed a ton, they do require some daily combing to keep their hair out of their eyes, among other things.

They also require a lot of professional hair cutting, but thanks to the high number of styles Shih Tzus can sport, this can be a fun and enjoyable experience for you and your dog.

Shepherd Dog

5. Australian Shepherds/American Shepherds

While Australian Shepherds and Mini American Shepherds are different breeds, they are very similar. Professionally cutting and shaving are not typical for these double-coated breeds, but they do have some heavy brushing requirements, especially during shedding season.

Aussies and MAS commonly work and play outside, which can lead to their coats becoming very dirty. This makes it very important to brush and bathe them regularly unless you want a very messy dog running around.
